Kids Education

Although there are probably tens of classic preschool songs and kids music songs, there are not many as well-known as Jack and Jill. The reason we term it as an all-time classic children’s song is that it’s extremely popular not only in the United States but pretty much every other country teaching English as one of the subjects to students in the schools.

A “Story” Song

Jack and Jill is basically a story song, where the poet or singer tells the story in a song-ly way. It’s about two kids, Jack and Jill, going up a hill to fetch a bucket of water from the well at the top of the hill.

However, as they are kids and the way to the top of the hill is full of obstacles, they have a hard time reaching there. At first, Jack loses his feet’s grip on the unstable ground of the mountain and ends up falling down the hill. And when this happens, his crown gets broken as well.

Jack gets hurt on his head, so they used some vinegar and a brown paper to patch the part of his head that had been hurt due to the fall.

Then when Jack is back to his home and taking some rest, Jill comes over. And as soon as she sees Jack’s paper plaster, he starts laughing at it. Jack’s mother is obviously agitated due to it and whips her across her knee for laughing at the situation Jack is in at that time.

Many Variations, Modifications

The story that we shared above might differ quite a bit from some of the other versions and variations of this song. This is because, over the past couple centuries, many poets have modified or added verses to it, some of which have become a standard part of the song while some other did not.

The children’s songs collection is probably now tens of songs strong. And we are only talking about some of the most popular ones out there.

However, it seems that few of them are creative enough to help kids learn something valuable as they listen and enjoy the song. The ABC Song, however, is certainly one of them.

What is the ABC Song All About?

First things first, it’s to be noted that although the ABC Song is an individual song on its own, it’s also something that represents a group of similar songs. They are all known as “Alphabet” songs, and they all have the various alphabets of a language as their lyrics or a part of their lyrics.

However, the nursery rhyme named as the ABC Song is one of the most well-known English kid’s songs. In the US, however, it’s more popularly known as “the alphabet song.”

Two Verses

There are two verses of the song, and both of them have the singer singing all the alphabets from A to Z. However, at the end of the first verse, the singer asks if the listener would like to sing the song with them the next time.

Then, at the end of the second verse, the singer thanks the listener for singing along with them.

As you can tell, it’s a great way to encourage kids to learn all the letters from A to Z, as they would find it really fun to sing along with the singer after they ask them to do in the first verse.

The United States “Z”

In the US, the letter “Z” is pronounced as “Zee,” and not “Zed” as it’s in many other English-speaking countries, including the UK, Australia and Canada. “Zed” being pronounced as “Zee” helps maintain the rhyme well though, although there are variants of this song that use the “Zed” and still manage just fine.

We have reviewed and discussed many children’s songs here on our blog, but few of them involve delicious food that would make your little ones feel hungry. However, Hot Cross Buns is one such unique song, and we will take a look at its origin as well as what it’s all about below.

While the first official record of this song was believed to be found in 1798; it was a rhyme from the Christmas Box. That said, however, there’s an official record of the song available, too; and it goes as back as in 1733.

It was basically a part of the song Poor Robin’s Almanack, which was simply a street cry in London. However, the part of the lyrics the song Hot Cross Buns is inspired from is pretty similar.

Hot Cross Buns – An Overview

Hot Cross Buns is not only one of the most unique kids songs that’s based on food, but also used as a street cry and even as an Easter song. The song is based around something known as hot cross bun, which is a spiced sweet. It’s usually made using either raisins or currants.

The song basically revolves around a woman making and selling delicious hot cross buns. A person comes over with his two daughters, and buys each of them a delicious bun. He only pays a penny for the two of them, which is in line with what the lyrics say “one a penny, two a penny.”

However, the song also goes on to tell the father that, if they don’t have any daughters, they can buy the buns for their sons instead.

Needless to say, this can be a nice little song for a father to hear with her daughter, and maybe even ask her mom to make her some delicious hot cross buns that he could then buy for a penny!
